Unit 17 Cardiac Abnormalities

This educational unit teaches sonographers how to identify fetal cardiac abnormalities during routine obstetric ultrasound screening. Students will learn normal cardiac anatomy, master extended cardiac views (LVOT, RVOT, three-vessel views), and recognize common defects including atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects, and atrioventricular canal defects. The course emphasizes the importance of multiplanar imaging and color Doppler technique to detect approximately 90% of major cardiac anomalies that are frequently missed on mid-trimester screening.
